Homeopathic Remedies for Constipation

Constipation is a common concern for both adults and children and can present in many different ways, including infrequent bowel motions, dry or hard stools, straining, discomfort, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation. For some it is occasional, while for others it becomes a persistent issue that affects comfort, mood, and overall wellbeing. Homeopathy offers gentle, individualised support by looking beyond the bowels alone and considering the whole person, including digestion, hydration, emotional state, energy levels, and lifestyle factors, with remedies selected according to the unique pattern of symptoms present. Below are some of our commonly prescribed constipation remedies but remember that it’s always best to consult with a homeopath for an individualised approach.

Nux vomica
Often indicated when constipation is associated with stress, overwork, irregular eating habits, travelling, or a sedentary lifestyle. There may be a frequent urge to pass stool with little result, or a sensation that the bowels have not fully emptied.

Bryonia
Constipation with very dry, hard stools that are difficult or painful to pass. There is often marked dryness overall and a strong thirst for large amounts of water. If Bryonia is needed, there is usually no urge for stool at all.

Alumina
Commonly considered when there is little to no urge to go, and especially helpful in children, the elderly and during pregnancy. Stools may be soft, hard, small like sheep dung, or even covered in mucous. Stools often requiring significant straining.

Plumbum Metallicum

Constipation that is associated with an intestinal obstruction and stools may be small hard, black balls. This can be a particularly helpful remedy for children and the elderly.

Silica
Constipation where stool begins to pass but then slips back, giving a sensation of weakness or lack of expulsive power in the rectum. It is often considered when constipation is slow, persistent, and associated with low vitality or sensitivity.

Lycopodium
Habitual constipation or constipation that is accompanied by other digestives symptoms such as bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort. These symptoms may be worse in the late afternoon or evening. Stools may be small, hard, or incomplete. There may be a burning pain after stool.

Calcarea carbonica
Often prescribed when constipation is part of a broader picture of sluggish digestion, fatigue, and feeling easily overwhelmed. Stools may be large, hard, and difficult to pass. This remedy is commonly considered for both children and adults, particularly if they have a Calc Carb ‘constitution’.

Platina

Soft, sticky, clay-like stools.

Supporting Constipation Naturally

Alongside homeopathic care, gentle lifestyle support can be helpful. Adequate hydration, regular clean meals, appropriate dietary fibre, daily exercise, and responding promptly to the urge to open the bowels all play an important role. Emotional stress and holding patterns, particularly in children, can also contribute and should be approached with patience and care.

Individualised Care Matters

Constipation can have many underlying causes, and what supports one person may not be suitable for another. If constipation is persistent, painful, or affecting daily life, a consultation with a qualified homeopath allows for a tailored approach that supports bowel function while also addressing the broader picture of health and wellbeing.
