Homeopathy for Vomiting & Digestive Upsets
Vomiting can be caused by a range of conditions, including gastroenteritis, food-related illness, motion sickness, over-indulgence, migraine and pregnancy. As always with homeopathic prescribing, remedies are selected depending on individual symptom patterns. Below are some of the traditional indications and uses of remedies that may be used to support individuals experiencing digestive upsets:
Nux vomica: Nausea and vomiting following overindulgence in food or alcohol.
Arsenicum album: Vomiting and gastrointestinal upset alongside diarrhoea. There may also be burning pains, restlessness, chilliness, and weakness.
Ipecacuanha: Persistent nausea with little to no relief even after vomiting. This remedy is also commonly selected when there is a cough that causes vomiting.
Pulsatilla: Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea caused by eating fatty foods. Nausea and vomiting during menses.
Aethusa: Vomiting of milk in babies shortly after breastfeeding.
Cocculus indicus: Nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness, travel or sleep deprivation.
Tabacum: Intense nausea associated with motion sickness or morning sickness, particularly when accompanied by pallor, cold sweat and a desire for fresh air.
Phosphorus: Vomiting of food or drink, sometimes immediately after eating or drinking (as soon as the liquid warms in the stomach). There may be a characteristic desire for cold drinks. This remedy may also be used for nausea or vomiting of morning sickness if the symptom picture fits.

When to seek help
Homeopathy can be used alongside conventional medicine, but it should never replace seeking appropriate care and advice from a medical professional in any serious illness. Please always seek urgent medical care if vomiting is persistent or severe, particularly if you are unable to keep fluids down, as this can lead to dehydration. It is also important to seek medical advice promptly if vomiting is accompanied by any of the following:
severe or persistent abdominal pain
blood or coffee-ground material in the vomit
green (bilious) vomit
severe headache or stiff neck
confusion, significant drowsiness
difficulty breathing
signs of dehydration, or if the person is unable to keep fluids down
recent head injury.
It is important to note that babies, young children, older adults and people with significant medical conditions may become dehydrated more quickly.
